Edo State Hospital Records Over 80 Rape Cases In 7 months

Dr. Jude Uchendu, a consultant pathologist in the Department of Pathology and Forensic Medicine in the hospital, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin.

He said more than 90 per cent of the cases were committed by people known by the victims with a significant number committed by neighbours or blood relations.

Acording to him, only few were carried out by strangers, such as armed robbers and people who met the girls on their way and took them to uncompleted buildings.

Uchendu also said some of the perpetrators of the crime were either girls’ fathers or caregivers.

“Between the month of March and October, we have interviewed over 80 patients and unfortunately, most of them are less than 18 years.

“This figure is only a tip of the iceberg because most people that are raped do not come to hospital to complain.

“The few victims that come to the hospital to complain do not pursue the matter as a legal case,” Uchendu said.

He said rape cases were becoming an epidemic and should be treated as a public health issue by stakeholders.

“We need people that will talk about it so that the public will know how to deal with such situations,” Uchendu said.

He said the victims were usually threatened by the perpetrators and thus, they did not tell their parents. The doctor urged parents to spend more time with their children so that they could monitor their activities and whereabouts.

He also called on the government to do something about the large number of uncompleted buildings, which he said served as hideouts for criminals and unemployed youths.

“It is observed that there are a lot of homes where parents are too busy, children are left in the care of neighbours or relatives.

“Parents should spend more time with their children, teach them about intercourse and teach them how to defend themselves so that in cases where they are exposed to rape they can run away.

“They should also teach them about their private part and to say no when people try to play with it,” Uchendu said.

Men Be Warned! Stop sucking wife’s breast while breastfeeding

BREAST-FEEDING-facebook
I’m sure most men will just not heed to this warning, infact, they will whoop their wives around if they are refused of that adam’s apple. Ah! How can men survive the period of breastfeeding without sucking from it like their lives depend on it? Na wa oh! This calls for a protest. lol
According to Vanguard,
MEN have been advised to keep away from their wives’ breasts while they are breast feeding their children to avoid inflicting wounds on the breasts and exposing the children to infection.
Professor Angela Oyo Ita, the Cross River State Commissioner for Health who gave the advice while flagging- off the 2013 Breast Feeding Week at Akpabuyo local Government Area of the state on Tuesday, stated that men sharing their wives’ breasts while they are breast feeding could inflict wound on the breasts and if the woman is HIV positive, the child could be exposed to the infection.
Professor Oyo Ita who was represented by the Director Nutrition of the Ministry of Health, Mrs Regina Adie called on the women to practice exclusive breastfeeding because it has been proven that breast milk contains 80% water and 20% minerals that are essential for the child’s growth.
“The World Health Organisation, the United Nation International Children Educational Fund, and other renown world agencies have carried out studies and it has proven that breastmilk is the best in keeping the child healthy, strong and happy”.
She said myths that a child that is exclusively fed on breast milk for six months would at some point die out of thirst is not true because breast milk contains enough water to keep the child happy and satisfied. “Some time ago, we came here and had a meeting with the men and called on them to support their wives to carry out exclusive breast feeding for their children and the men said no because the children would die from the thirst for water, but that is not true”.
The Health Commissioner said the theme for this year’s breast feeding week. ‘Breast Feeding, Close to Mother”, was apt because the relationship between the mother and the child becomes stronger when the mother breast feeds the baby exclusively for six months.
“If you look at the face of your baby during breast feeding, you would see joy and satisfaction on the face and that brings the child closer to the mother”.
Mrs Rosemary Effiong, the Chairman of Akpabuyo Local Government Area said breast feeding keeps children strong and free of health challenges and “We in Akpabuyo do not want to have children who would put unnecessary pressure on our health facilities, so let every mother listen and obey the instruction of the focal person on breast feeding”.
Mrs Effiong who was represented by the Secretary of Council, Mr Edem Okon said the council would continue to offer the needed support to mothers through financial empowerment to enable them feed well to breastfeed their children

Enyeama: I'll Play Until I'm 40!

Super Eagles first choice goalkeeper,Vincent Enyeama has declared that he will play on until he reaches the golden age of 40.

The Lille of France goaltender has been in superb form since his return to the French Lique 1 side after a season-long loan stint at Israeli side,Maccabi Tel Aviv, keeping eight clean sheets in 10 league games including five straight games without conceeding a goal.

The Nigerian was in his elements last weekend, stopping an 85th minute penalty against Montpellier to extend his clean sheets to eight.

Enyeama believes he is just scratching the surface of what he is capable of doing and added that he would be around until he clocks 40 years of age.  "I feel like I'm still in my nursery years, my learning curves... My best years are still to come, I guess. I'll play until I'm 40. I love football, I love the game,''he told lique 1.com.

The former Enyimba of Aba shot stopper believes he is divinely backed to become what he has become today after being declared surplus to requirement at the club just a little over a year ago.

'I will not say I was lucky to stop Montpellier's late penalty on Saturday although I believe I am being guided by God because I believe in Him,'he told his club's official website.

He also praised his teammates for providing him with the cover he needs to achieve what he has achieved so far.

" I will especially like to acknowledge and thank my teammates who did a good job against Montpellier. They ran, tackled, fought to the end to defend the advantage we had early in the game . Clearly, they did a fantastic job , the players and the entire staff of the club.We had a wonderful evening.''
