Eagles Not World Cup Team Yet- Onigbinde
Despite Super Eagles booking a place in next year’s FIFA World Cup in
Brazil on Saturday and two days later put up a 2-2 brilliant
performance against Azzuri of Italy in an international friendly match,
FIFA and CAF Instructor, Chief Adegboye Onigbinde has declared that the
Nigerian senior national team are not a World Cup team yet.
Onigbinde told P.M.NEWS Sports in an interview early today that despite the fact the Eagles qualified for their fifth World Cup appearance, the African champions still need to improve on their game if they want to go far in next year’s World Cup.
“I had not been watching the Eagles’ matches of late, but I want to share the believe of some soccer-loving Nigerians that the team are not a World Cup team yet. We still have a lot of works to do if we want Stephen Keshi and his team to excel in next year’s World Cup.
“I always said that I am not satisfied with any achievement the Eagles might have recorded but one thing I believe is that the team can still do better if they want to make any meaningful impact at the World Cup. Kudos to the players and their coaches for securing the ticket to play in the World Cup and forcing former world champions, Italy to a 2-2 draw in a Grade A friendly match on Monday,” said Onigbinde.
The former Eagles’ coach noted that for Nigeria to be successful in Brazil next year, there should be cohesion in the team, and the players should have zeal and determination to succeed. Onigibinde, who took Nigeria to the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea and Japan, said that Nigeria can possibly win the World Cup if necessary things are put in their in right place.
He said there are many factors that worked against Eagles in South Africa 2010 FIFA World Cup which are ranging from administrative, tribal sentiment, technical, government’s interference and late preparation. Onigbinde said if all these barriers can be taken care of, the team have what it takes to go far in next year’s World Cup.

Gov. Fashola Bans Skating On Expressway
Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State has vowed to arrest and
prosecute Mr. Michael Ekundayo, an official of the Lagos State Traffic
Management Authority, LASTMA, caught on video collecting N8,000 bribe
from a motorist and is now on the run.
The governor also banned children and others from skating on the highways, saying that anyone caught violating the order would be arrested and prosecuted according to the dictates of the law.
Fashola, who spoke at the Blueroof Hall, Lagos Television Complex, Agidingbi in Ikeja, Lagos, western Nigeria on Tuesday before a gathering of professionals and respectable members of the society who constitute volunteers of the Special Traffic Mayors, also called for the abolishment of the Federal Housing Authority, FHA.
The governor said the LASTMA official caught negotiating bribe inside a citizen’s car had brought disgrace to the outfit and would be hunted down and prosecuted.
“I want to first salute the citizen that got the video of the LASTMA officer who was caught negotiating bribe inside a citizen’s car. We must all nail and shame him and we must all use that kind of medium to fish out all the bad eggs in the society and bring them to justice.
“That LASTMA officer is still on the run and we have declared him wanted. I can assure you today that we will get him. And as soon as we do, we will give him all his rights and he will have his day in court,” he vowed.
On skating, Fashola said he noticed that the youths had also taken to skating because the road is safe, saying government was not going to discourage them but that they should do that in designated places like recreation centres, stadia and others.
“They cannot skate on the highways. It is a violation of the traffic law 2010. I implore all parents to call their children and their wards to order because any child found skating on the highway will be arrested and will be brought to justice. It must stop today. Skating on the highways has to stop now. The danger is too much and it is the responsibility of the government to safe lives,” he stated.
On the position of the government concerning road development in FESTAC Town, Fashola explained that the state government was having an issue with the Federal government, pointing out that the taxes and land charges being collected by the FHA were being sent to Abuja.
“I have said that the Federal Housing Authority is an anathema to the current constitution. The Federal Government does not own land, so, I don’t see how it can have a housing authority. But it was created during the military and now that we are in a civilian dispensation, as I made a case on Saturday when we were in Sokoto, this is one of the laws that the National Assembly should simply amend or repeal to bring them in conformity with the current dispensation,” he said.
On LASTMA, the governor pointed out that its primary responsibility was to keep the state traffic moving, stressing that “this is the reason why the agency exists. Arresting traffic offenders is secondary. If making an arrest will increase the traffic, let the offenders go. I say this not because I don’t want law breakers to be apprehended and brought to justice. But law breakers cannot undermine our main objective.
“The longer people stay more in traffic, the more money is wasted and fuel are burnt and when people stay more in traffic, this leads to increase in the price of goods in the state. But with a moving traffic, price of goods will be stable.”
Fashola explained that the challenge of managing traffic in Lagos State necessitated the need for the meeting with the Special Traffic Mayors, while stressing the need to pay attention to road safety measures for the betterment of all.
“Over the last few days, we have begun to experience traffic gridlock within the state. There are couples of factors that we all must be aware. We promised to address inner roads and at the moment we have commenced work on 200 inner roads in the state. It shouldn’t be surprising that the construction is causing traffic in the state because these are areas where people are already living especially on Joel Ogunnaike, Kodesho and others.
“The access to those roads will definitely be impaired. That is part of the problem. Also, we are getting closer to the Christmas and New Year. At this time, there is heavy movement of people at the same time on the road,” he explained.

Pastor’s Wife Bathes Sister With Hot Water
The police at Idimu, Lagos, western Nigeria have arrested the wife of
a pastor, Mrs. Angela Uzoma, for pouring hot water on her sister.
She was arraigned before the Ejigbo Magistrates’ Court for injuring the teenager.
The 28-year old housewife who is also the women’s leader in her husband’s ministry at Shasha allegedly poured hot water on Chidinma Chukwu, causing her serious injury.
The incident happened at their residence at Ifelodun Street Orisunmbare, Shasha, Lagos State, western Nigeria.
P.M.NEWS gathered that the pastor’s wife accused the 14-year old Chidinma of selling only few pawpaws on the fateful day.
Angela, according to the police investigating officer (IPO), had warned Chidinma to ensure that she did not come back home without selling all the pawpaws packed in her tray for sale that day.
Unfortunately, she did not sell everything and Angela became angry, accusing her of being too playful.
P.M.NEWS gathered that she tried to hide the incident by refusing to take her to a hospital. Instead, she arranged with a nurse who was treating her at home.
The matter came into the open when a samaritan heard of it and reported to the police at Idimu. Angela was promptly arrested.
Narrating what happened, Angela told P.M.NEWS at the police station that she did not intentionally pour water on her, adding that she brought her from the village to train her and she was hawking pawpaw to assist the family to feed. “It is the devil’s work and I regret what happened. I want to settle this matter out of court,” she begged.
Her husband, Pastor Paul Uzoma, described the incident as unfortunate. “When I heard of it, I blamed my wife and told her she went too far,” he said.
He, however, said his wife meant well for the girl and that was why she brought her to Lagos to train her.
When she was arraigned in court on Tuesday, she pleaded not guilty. The presiding magistrate, Mr. P.E Nwaka granted her bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.
She was ordered to be remanded in prison custody at Kirikiri, Apapa when she couldn’t fulfill the conditions attached to her bail.
The matter has been adjourned till 12 December, 2013

Couple, in-law arrested for stealing N13m from church
A
suspect, Pius Edward; his wife, Fausat; and her mother, have been
arrested by the Oyo State Police Command in connection with the theft of
N13m from Bishop’s Court, an Anglican church in Bodija area of Ibadan.
Edward, a security man at the church was said to have broken into an office where the money was kept and made away with it.
It was alleged that he woke his wife the following morning and told her to prepare for a journey with the children.
After
the theft was reported by one of the reverends in the church, the
police were, however, able to trace his movement and nabbed him at
Idi-Iroko, Ogun State, where he had gone to buy two cars with part of
his loot.
He was also said to be planning to relocate his family to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.
The
state Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Ndabawa, said Edwards’ in-law’s
involvement was attempting to help the family disappear from Nigeria by
facilitating the procurement of their travel documents.
He
said, “On November 9, at about 9am, an accountant attached to Bishop’s
Court, Bodija, Ibadan, reported to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad office
that on November 8, at 11.55pm, Edward broke into the office and made
away with N13m which belongs to the church.
“Investigation
revealed that the suspect was hiding in a hotel at Odeda in Ogun State.
With the help of immigration office, Ogun State Command, the suspect
and his family were assisted in procuring travelling document to Dubai
without letting him know that he was being lured out of his hiding
place. He was arrested thereafter at Idi-Iroko, Ogun State with two
unregistered car he had purchased with part of the money.”
Also
recovered from him were N656, 000 and $2,300, while Edward said he tore
a N7m cheque belonging to the church for fear of being arrested while
attempting to cash it.
Edward
confessed to the crime while speaking with our correspondent, adding
that he only stole N2.5m and that he purchased N1.8m cars from the loot.
“I
pushed my wife into the crime. My mother in-law was involved because
she introduced me to the immigration officer that helped us procure the
travelling document,” he said.
Fausat said she did not know that her husband had stolen the money.
“He threatened to leave me with the children if I did not follow him.
“So I followed him. He did not tell me that he stole money from the church,” she said.

Algeria Qualifies For Brazil, edge Burkina Faso
Algeria sealed the fifth and final African zone World Cup qualifying
berth on Tuesday, edging their play-off with Burkina Faso on away goals.
Last month, Algeria lost the first leg play-off 3-2 in Ougadougou and therefore needed just a goal to qualify for their fourth World Cup finals having featured at the 1982, 1986 and 2010 competitions.
With Algeria’s qualification, it is the same line-up of teams who represented Africa at 2010 in South Africa – Nigeria, Cameroon, Ivory Coast and Ghana.
Algeria got the goal they needed in the 49th minute through skipper Madjid Bougherra off a goal mouth scramble caused by a free-kick.
The Stallions of Burkina Faso, beaten finalists at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations, were thus denied the chance to reach a first-ever World Cup.
Around 40 Algerian football fans were injured before kick-off at the game which had attracted a packed house of 40,000 at the stadium 50 kilometres south of Algiers, the APS news agency said, citing police reports.
The stadium was packed to capacity as early as six hours before the match was due to kickoff despite the cold and rainy conditions.
It was an even exchange between the two teams at the start of this match staged inside a packed Mustapha Tchaker Stadium in Blida.
The home team were first to settle down and they continued to attack Burkina Faso, whose solid and packed defence kept them out.
The Algeria goalkeeper Mohamed Zemmamouche kept out a desperate defensive clearance that was headed for goal in the 11th minute.
The first big chance fell to Algeria in the 21st minute, when Islam Slimane was allowed a free header off a cross from the left right inside the box, but he failed to direct it on target.
Algeria captain Bougherra was booked in the 44th minute for a double-footed tackle on his Burkina Faso counterpart Charles Kabore as the hosts began to display their frustration.
In first half stoppage time, Burkina Faso goalkeeper Daouda Diakite smothered a low shot by El Arabi Soudani.
In the 57th minute, Slimane let fly from inside the box but his powerful snap shot missed its mark even with the Burkina goalkeeper beaten.
Chances were few and far between in this physical contest, which was marred by countless stoppages.
With the ticket to Brazil 2014 slipping away from them, Burkina Faso’s Belgian coach Paul Put threw in forwards Aristide Bance and Alain Traore in the closing minutes.
In stoppage time, Burkina Faso saw a last-ditch effort crash against the post, but it was not enough for this west African nation.

Prof. Omo Omoruyi for burial on Friday
The crisis in late Professor Omo Omoruyi’s family over burial
procedures has been resolved to pave way for his burial this weekend.
The crisis which had delayed an official condolence visit by Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo state to the family, was resolved by the Benin monarch, Oba Erediauwa, who brokered peace among the Omoruyis.
Three of his children and brothers were all at the palace to brief the Oba about the burial arrangement which will commence Thursday, 21 November.
It was reliably gathered that the family had resolved all the contending issues, following which a burial committee was set up to ensure a befitting burial for the late Omoruyi who died on 14 October.
The Esogban of Benin, Chief David Edebiri, who is related to the late Prof.Omoruyi, led other members of the family to the palace today.
Briefing journalists after the peace meeting, Chief Edebiri said: “Our brother Professor Was a great man both in Benin Kingdom and the world as a whole, so there is no way that kind of person will be buried without informing our Royal Father. The Oba has to give his blessings before the burial which he has given to the family now.”
On the earlier disagreement among family members as regards to the burial arrangement, Chief Edebiri said that “there is no problem at all, the major thing is that he will be buried this weekend. And all arrangements have been made to give him a befitting burial. You can see that the children, brothers were all at the palace to see the Oba, that tells you that everybody is united.”
A burial programme released by the family today indicated that the burial starts on Thursday with a service of songs, interment on Friday and outing service on Sunday.

Former Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel Interrogated Over Abuse of Import Waivers
SaharaReporters had in 2007 revealed that the then governor was involved in a N500 million import waiver scam during his tenure as Ogun State governor.
Our source said that Mr. Daniel obtained import waivers for Ogun State as part of preparations for the 15th National Sports Festival in November 2005. The governor then sold part of the waivers to Globe Motors, owned by Willie Anumudu, for N300 million. Then Governor Daniel later stated that Globe Motors had given the Ogun State government a “donation” of N300 million in cash and cars to host the games.
After our 2007 report, the EFCC briefly arrested Mr. Anumudu, the Managing Director of Globe Motors.
However, an investigator at the EFCC told SaharaReporters that Mr. Daniel further abused a second import waiver which he secured for the importation of 44,000 metric tons of iron rods for the Ogun State government to build the “Gateway Games Village.” The Village was built to accommodate athletes attending the games. The controversial merchandize arrived after the games had ended in April 2006, and the governor converted the rods to his personal use, investigators said.
Our EFCC source it was not yet clear if the EFCC will file fresh charges against Mr. Daniel who is already undergoing trial for money laundering before a state High Court in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
