Boko Haram Gunmen kill 40 In Fresh Attack

Shekau:His men on the offensive again
The efficacy of the five month old state of emergency in Nigeria’s north eastern states has come again under scrutiny with another report of the killing by the Boko Haram insurgents of 40 people and the wounding of a dozen others, in Bama, a town in Borno state, bordering Cameroon.

The attack was said to have been carried out on Thursday, two days before a deadly ambush on a wedding party, in which no fewer than 30 people were killed, including children.
Thursday’s attack was carried out by some 70 gunmen who stormed Bama late in the night in a convoy of motorcycles and pickup trucks, said Baba Shehu, of the area’s local government.
“They shot down 27 persons and injured 12… About 300 houses were burnt,” he told journalists in Borno’s capital Maiduguri, where Boko Haram was founded more than a decade ago.
Bama and other remote parts of northeast Nigeria have seen a series of brutal attacks in recent weeks which have left hundreds dead, despite official assurances that the insurgents have been weakened by an ongoing military offensive.
Details of massacres in Borno have typically been slow to emerge.
The mobile phone network in the area has been switched off since May, when President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency across the northeast and launched the military operation aimed at crushing at the Islamists’ four-year uprising.
Shehu, who blamed the Bama attack on Boko Haram, said the gunmen also destroyed 40 shops, killed livestock and stole roughly four million naira ($25,000, 19,000 euros) from Bama residents.
In a separate incident, he said 13 people travelling in a passenger bus in the same area were “ambushed by the (Islamist) militants and murdered in cold blood” on Saturday, bringing the total number of people killed to 40.
No other details were provided about the attack.
Also on Saturday in Borno, suspected Boko Haram gunmen killed 30 people in a wedding party, including the groom.
The group was on its way back to Borno from a neighbouring state when the attackers opened fire, leaving a trail of bodies lying on the road, residents said.
A Human Rights Watch toll earlier this year said the ongoing conflict has cost more than 3,600 lives, including those killed by security forces who have been accused of major abuses, although the current figure is certainly much higher.
The military maintains that its massive offensive against the Islamists, which has included aerial bombings, has left the group in disarray and contained the rebel fighters in remote parts of the northeast.
But a major attack last month in Damaturu, the heavily fortified capital of northeastern Yobe state, cast doubt on that claim.
Shekau claimed responsibility for the attack in a video released on Sunday.
On December 14, Jonathan will have to decide whether to extend the state of emergency when its six-month mandate expires.
Some analysts say the emergency measures and the military assault have been effective, while others counter that Boko Haram could still regroup and resume attacks on a range of targets across the country.

Ex-manager Sues John Holt Over Unlawful Dismissal

A former employee of John Holt PLC, Mr Echezona Nzeribe, has taken the company before the National Industrial Court, Abuja, alleging unlawful dismissal.
Nzeribe, who was an area manager of the company, told the court that he had worked with the company for 15 years before his dismissal.
He told the court that he was suspended in June 2012 by the defendant over alleged sale of the company’s generator valued at N2 million by the sales manager.
The claimant further explained that the sales manager failed to remit the money to the company’s account.
Nzeribe alleged that the defendant suspended him without given him the opportunity to defend himself contrary to the provision of the company’s staff manual.
The claimant is praying the court to declare that the dismissal was unlawful, null and void and of no effect.
He is also praying the court to order the defendant to reinstate him and pay all his salaries and other entitlements from June 2012 till date.
The Presiding Judge, Justice Peter Lifu, fixed Dec. 5 for hearing, and ordered that all court paper be served on the defendants.

"Imprisoned" Enugu First Lady, Clara Chime, Hires Femi Falana To Secure Her Release

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has asked the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. MD Abubakar, to ensure the immediate release from unlawful detention of Mrs. Clara Chime, the First Lady of Enugu State who is being held hostage at Government House Enugu by Governor Sullivan Chime, or be dragged to court.
In a letter dated November 1, 2013, Mr. Falana, representing Mrs. Chime, pointed out that his client has been kept incommunicado in solitary confinement for over four months on the directives of Governor Chime.
“Thus our client’s fundamental rights to the dignity of her person, personal liberty, fair hearing, private and family life and freedom of movement guaranteed by the Constitution and the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004 have been violated without any legal justification,” it said.
“Although our client’s dehumanizing detention conditions have had deleterious effects on her psychological state as well as her mental and physical health she has been denied access to her doctors by her abductors,” the petition said.  “It is particularly disturbing to note that some of the police and state security service personnel assigned to secure the safety of the Enugu State governor, his wife and other family members have aided and abetted Mr. Chime in subjecting our client to egregious infringements of her aforesaid fundamental rights.”
It pointed out, however, that unlike the governor who is currently immune from prosecution under the constitution, the police and state security service officials involved in the illegal arrest and detention of Mrs. Chime ought to be sanctioned under the relevant laws.
In a letter exclusively published by SaharaReporters on October 28, Mrs. Chime complained that Governor Chime had placed her under house arrest, and begged human rights bodies to come to her rescue.
She said that eminent personalities such as President and Mrs. Goodluck Jonathan and the Bishop Callistus Onaga of Enugu State and other top priests had attempted to intervene in the matter without success.
Among other things, Mrs. Chime said she had been introduced to two psychiatrists, Dr. Onwukwe and Dr. Agumo, who prescribed “all kinds of drugs that ends up keeping me acute depressed and also drives me into hallucinations.”

Fire guts 22-storey Great Nigeria House in Lagos Hundreds of tenants and traders wept on Monday as fire engulfed the Great Nigeria House along Martins Street on Lagos Island, western Nigeria, which served as their offices and warehouses.

The fire paralyzed commercial activities in the Balogun area of Lagos Island.
Many of the traders were seen scrambling to salvage few of their goods from the burning building.
The 22-storey Great Nigeria House, acclaimed as the fifth tallest building in Nigeria, accommodates Mainstreet Bank and also serves as warehouses to some traders.
A witness said the fire started at about 5 a.m. and was first noticed on the first floor.
He disclosed that as at 10.30 a.m., the fire had taken over the first four floors.
Fire service officials, men of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, police, health officials and others were at the scene battling to put it out.
As at 11 a.m., the firemen were able to contain the fire and also prevented it from spreading to other floors and shopping plazas around the skyscraper.
Director, Lagos State Fire Service, Rasak Fadipe, told P.M.NEWS that the fire service received a distress call around 6.34 a.m. that the building was on fire.
He disclosed that the fire trunks at Onikan Fire Station, with 10,000 litres of water were mobilised to the scene. On getting there, his men discovered that the fire was of great magnitude and that there was no way the 10,000 litres of water could quell the fire.
“We had to call for reinforcement from the Sari-Iganmu Fire Station which brought another 10,000 litres of water to fight the fire,” he said.

Fadipe added that the fire men also brought aerial ladders used in fighting fire in highrise buildings to the scene to gain access to the affected floors.
He identified crowd control as one of the challenges his men faced when they arrived the scene, adding that some social miscreants also called ‘area boys’ tried to snatch the fire equipment from his men.
He said his men had to tackle the crowd before they could gain access to the building and that the policemen on ground helped in cordoning off the area.
According to him, the thick smoke billowing from the building also posed a challenge to his men but that they had to use a breathing aparatus to gain entrance into the building.
He said  the cause of the fire could not be ascertained.

Fadipe also confirmed that the Federal Fire Service and that of the United Bank for Africa, UBA, complemented the effort of the state firemen.
Spokesperson, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, said the fire was still raging as at the time of filing this report.

I’m Going Nowhere, Wife Tells Divorce Seeking Hubby

A driver, Morufu Alimi, 42, of Mararaba in Nasarawa State, central Nigeria on Friday urged a Grade 1 Area Court in Aso Pada to dissolve his 13-year-old marriage to Omolara, his wife, but the woman said she is going nowhere.
Alimi told the court that he divorced Omolara, 35, ‘Islamically,’ requesting the court to confirm the divorce and give him custody of his children.
He said that after divorcing Omolara, she had refused to leave his house.
“Anytime we have problems, she will remove her veil and start wearing trousers which is against my religion. Also, she will be praying and shouting ‘holy ghost fire’, in fact, she has spat on me several times.
“After I divorced her, she went back to her religion which is Christianity and vowed to also covert my children. That is why I became angry and divorced he. I want the court to help and give me the custody of my children.”
Alimi said that the two children, aged 12 and six years, had not reached the age to decide the religion they would want to belong to.
In her response, Omolara said that the divorce would not hold because her parents did not approve the marriage but because she loved him, she went ahead to marry Alimi.
The mother of two also said that she changed her religion to marry Alimi and had vowed never to leave her marriage again as this was her second marriage.
“On the issue of divorce, he has said it more than one million times.
“I told him that I cannot leave because I contributed to the building of the house we are living in now.
“He has failed in his responsibilities, I am a teacher, I pay the children’s school fees, I buy food for the house and take care of the children, therefore, I can’t go,” she stated.
She, however, told the court that she could only agree to the divorce on three conditions: “Until the children attain the age of adulthood to decide the religion they want to belong to.
“He should pay me the amount of money I contributed to the building of our house.
“He should also rent an apartment for me,” Omolara demanded.
The Presiding Member of the court, Malam Danlada Musa, admonished the couple to calm down and settle their differences.
Musa said that the holy prophet had admonished true Muslims to always seek reconciliation in any matter.
“Go and think about this matter, talk to each other to see if you can resolve the matter.
“The Almighty Allah said that he is not happy with divorce,” Musa said and adjourned the case till 22 October for continuation of hearing or report of settlement.

Pele Sued By Grandkids For Child Support

Two teenage grandchildren of Brazil football legend Pele have sued him for child support, the Diario de Sao Paulo reported Thursday.
The two, aged 13 and 15, are the sons of Pele’s daughter Sandra Regina, who died in 2006.
They are seeking support payment of $6,000 for each to cover health insurance and education as well compensation of an unspecified amount.
The daily quoted their lawyer, Claudio Forssell, as saying that the teenagers “were abandoned intellectually, morally and materially” by their grandfather.
“Pele always rejected them,” according to the lawyer who said the teenagers had not met with their grandfather since 2011.
Pending a final ruling scheduled for next month, judges ordered Pele to pay each grandchild $760.
Born Edson Arantes do Nascimento and nicknamed O Rei (the king), Pele, now 72, is widely considered the greatest player of all time having helped Brazil win World Cup titles in 1958, 1962 and 1970.
