Controversial Rivers Police Commissioner, Joseph Mbu To Leave Office This Week- Sahararepoters

Joseph Mbu, who has had a controversial career as the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, has been removed from his post, a source at police headquarters in Abuja has informed SaharaReporters. The source said the commissioner is expected to leave his post at the end of this week. However, the source added that the police hierarchy has made no public announcement of Mr. Mbu’s removal.

The removal of the police commissioner is coming on the heels of threats by opposition party All Progressives Congress (APC) to block all legislative proposals  until the political crisis in Rivers State is resolved.

A police source told SaharaReporters that, barring any last-minute changes, Mr. Mbu will be sent to the National Institute for Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, Jos as a face-saving measure.

Mr. Mbu has been accused of working to undermine Governor Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers State. The controversial commissioner had often provided cover to members of the political opposition in Rivers State who have sought to cause violence in the state by attempting to hijack the state assembly in an illicit bid to impeach Mr. Amaechi.

Atiku Abubakar: Why I dumped PDP (Full statement)

AFTER CONSULTATION, IT IS TIME TO MOVE TO APC. LET THE BRIDGE-BUILDING CONTINUE

Press Statement by Atiku Abubakar, GCON, Turaki Adamawa and former Vice President, Federal Republic of Nigeria on his Resignation from the PDP and his Joining the APC

In 2006, as a result of my firm stand in defence of our constitution and our democracy, my supporters and I were pushed out of our party, the Peoples Democratic Party, a party that we worked tirelessly with other compatriots to build as a vehicle to restore democracy to our country. We later returned to that party in 2009 when a new leadership of the party and the country promised a new direction, a direction of inclusiveness, of internal democracy, of an end to impunity, adherence to the rule of law and respect for the dignity of members and Nigerians.
Sadly, however, those promises have not been kept. In addition, the PDP continues to be beset with many crises, mostly leadership-induced crises. It has since lost touch with Nigerians and efforts made by many well-meaning members and stakeholders to bring it back to the vision of the founders have been rebuffed. To demonstrate the seriousness of the challenges and bring public attention to it I and some other leaders and stakeholders staged a walkout during the party’s last convention in Abuja.
As I speak, most of the issues that led to that walk-out are yet to be addressed. Many founding members of the PDP, I included, continue to be marginalized and excluded from the affairs of the party. For instance as a former Vice President, I am by virtue of the PDP constitution, a member of the party’s Board of Trustees and its National Executive Committee. However, I am not invited to the meetings of those organs nor consulted on their decisions, apparently because I dared to exercise my right to contest in the party’s primary election for a chance to be its flag-bearer in the 2011 elections. We have, therefore, concluded that that party cannot be redeemed. In short the PDP has abandoned Nigerians, the very people who gave it life and many electoral victories.
More worrisome though is the danger posed to the continued existence of this country by this culture of impunity and arbitrariness. We continue to have threats from officially protected political extremists. Increasingly our people are recklessly being divided along the lines of religion, ethnicity and region for political gains. Our history and that of many other countries in Africa and Eastern Europe ought to teach us that this is very dangerous and must stop.
We can and we must do better. Our people deserve better.
It is against this background that we should understand the visit by the leaders of the APC and their invitation to me to join hands with them to save the country. Consequently, I have been consulting my supporters and associates, my family and friends for the past few weeks. My decision may not satisfy some of my friends and associates. In the end, however, I have to put the interest of our country first. This country has done so much for me personally and it deserves all that we can do to help rebuild it and serve our people better.
Following this extensive consultative process, I have, therefore, decided to cast my lot with the APC, a party of change committed to the improvement of the lives of our people and to the continued existence and development of Nigeria as one indivisible country. My resignation letter as a member of the PDP will be delivered to the party tomorrow.
This is the right decision. As in 2006 it is the struggle for democracy and constitutionalism and service to my country and my people that are driving my choice and my decision. Let me emphasize that this is not about me. We have to have a country before people can aspire to lead it, but as it is today we may be losing this country. That is not acceptable.
I encourage my political associates and friends to register and join the APC once the registration exercise commences, so that together we can change this country for the better.
The process of building a nation, of securing and deepening democracy is indeed difficult. And it is not a lineal process. There would be alignment and realignment of political forces. There would be ups and downs and zig-zags, triumphs and challenges. Amidst all that, patriots must remain focused and do what has to be done to save and build the country and serve our people better.
That is what I have decided to do. I will do all within my God-given powers to help the APC win elections all over Nigeria and bring true change to our country and its long-suffering people.
Thank you and God bless Nigeria.
Atiku Abubakar, GCON
(Turaki Adamawa)
Former Vice President, Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Why I Bought Cars For All My Children - Pete Edochie

The veteran actor said to motivate each of his six children, he bought them all cars upon graduation from the university.
"I wanted to motivate them and keep them away from peer pressure. Parents must be able to motivate their children and set target for them. The minimum target for each of them was to graduate from higher institution; their reward upon graduation is a car. And where I come from, it is important to keep one’s word; I bought the car for each of them.
The celebrated actor who has been married for over 45 years said his marriage is about the longest in the industry and he never thought of taking a new wife.
“I married early and have remained married since then. What am I looking for a second wife for? I married a woman who gave me six children, what could I possibly be looking for in another woman that I didn’t get from this woman? There is no reason for it"

For those who don't know Pete Edochie is the father of Nollywood finest actor Yul Edochie, who also got his car after graduation from the University of Port Harcourt.

Details On How NNPC Staff Was Killed On A Trip To Abuja

The Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) has arrested nine persons, including a native doctor in connection with the killing of a staff of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). The Deputy Commissioner of Police FSARS, Mr Chris Ezike, confirmed the arrest while speaking with a correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos yesterday.

Ezike, who is of the Adeniji-Adele Police Station, said that the suspects committed the crime on Sept. 23, 2012. He gave the name of the NNPC staff as Mr Sylvester Emefiele, who worked with NNPC’s Transformation Office in Abuja. Continue after the cut...

The commissioner said that the wife of the victim, Ngozi, had petitioned the Inspector-General of police in September, 2012 over the disappearance of her husband after leaving Lagos for Abuja.

Ezike said that the woman revealed that her husband left Lagos for Abuja on the invitation of his boss to process his visa for a training programme in Hungary.

“She claimed her husband sent her SMS on Sept. 23, 2012 at about 8.37 p.m that he was at Gwagwalada and that was the last she heard from him.

“She also stated that surprisingly, she noticed that withdrawals were being made from her husband’s accounts through ATM,’’ he said.

Ezike said that the arrest was made possible through scientific tracking of the mobile phone line of the victims, stressing that a school drop-out was first arrested in Ilesa, Osun with the victim’s blackberry handset.

“The suspect confessed that he bought the phone from one of the suspects, a cab driver in Modakeke in Osun State for N22, 000.

He added that after the arrest of the cab driver in Abuja, they were able to arrest others in connection with the crime.

“Two of the suspects confessed that they picked up the victim in their taxi cab with registration No. AG 956 KEF at Giri in the Gwagwalada Area Council to be dropped at Finance Quarters, Wuye, Abuja.

“The driver of the cab was the one that picked the victim and picked the second suspect some metres away even as the victim protested, the driver pleaded with the victim that the man was his brother.

“The second suspect claimed he brought out hammer as a decoy for pistol as soon as he entered the front of the cab. They subdued the victim and took him to a nearby bush.

“They claimed they search and dispossessed him of his laptop, N3,000 cash, three ATM cards and other items.

“They claimed they forced the victim to disclose his ATM pin numbers. One of the suspects went to the banks to withdraw N180, 000 immediately and the second suspect watch over the victim.

“They claimed that after they discovered the victim had more money in his accounts, they used charm prepared by the native doctor on him and he became weak.

“They claimed they discovered that the man died the following day and they abandoned the corpse in the bus and escaped.

“On June 10th, 2013, the two suspects led the DCP and crime scene forensic experts led by the police doctor, Emenike Chinenyenwa, to the scene located at Idu along Airport Road, eight kilometres from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport junction, Abuja.

“At the scene, we met a completely decomposed skeleton suspected to be the remains of the victim.

“The bones of the legs were still stuck in the jeans trousers while his ribs were scattered around.

“His wrist watch, one leg of his sandals and the twine rope used in tying him and other belongings were recovered there.

“The remains have been packaged by forensic experts for autopsy by the police pathologist.

“The victim’s family members were invited to identify the items recovered. The wife and younger brother were able to identify them.

“The two suspects also led detectives to arrest the native doctor that prepared the charm in Ipetumodu, Osun State.

“Our investigation has been able to established offences of criminal conspiracy, kidnapping, armed robbery and culpable homicide,’’ Ezike said.

The DCP said that after the DNA test on the bones and tooth of the victim, the report by the Force Chief Consultant Pathologist, Dr Akhiwu Wilson, showed that they were similar to that of the victim’s son and his brother.

“The suspects were first arraigned on Nov. 19, 2013 at High Court, FCT, Abuja.

“The suspects are coming to court again on Jan. 31, 2014 now that the lab result is out,’’ Ezike added. (NAN)
